Action Plans for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency support the National Vision "Sao Tome and Principe 2030: the country we need to build"

Sao Tome and Principe has one of the highest electricity prices in sub-Saharan Africa. The sector remains subsidized, tariffs do not reflect costs and the financial burden affects the country's macroeconomic stability. Due to the outdated unavailability of energy in the transmission and distribution system, electricity supply is characterized by frequent power outages, forcing large and small customers to operate with independent diesel generators. About 20% of the population in rural areas still has no access to electricity. The majority of the population does not have access to sustainable cooking services and depends on traditional biomass and coal.

In this context, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Public Works, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Environment are implementing the project "Strategic Program to promote investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency in the energy sector of Sao Tome and Principe". The project receives funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and will be implemented between 2019 and 2023 in close coordination with the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the African Development Bank and others.
